The Importance of Landscape Lighting

Outdoor living spaces are becoming more and more popular, and proper lighting can make or break the experience. Well-placed and carefully selected lighting fixtures can improve the time you spend outside, and make you want to spend more time outside.

We usually think of light as a tool, something simply to help us see in the dark and add safety and security to our landscape, but it can be so much more with the proper design. There is always the utility of adequately lighting a pathway or an entry or gate. In the photo above, however, how much more appreciation of the house is evident with the lights washing the various architecture? How proud are the owners of their landscaping and trees?

A landscape lighting system can turn your house and property into a wonderland!

Types of Lights

There are several forms of landscape lighting fixtures, each one designed for a specific purpose. There is no one-size-fits-all landscape light, but the good news is that each light fixture performs extremely well. There are path lights which are aesthetically pleasing. and well lights that shine up onto trees and bushes that are designed to be almost completely hidden during the day.

The slideshow below demonstrates a few concepts for illuminating trees and foliage. There are “up” lights shining up from the ground that light up the trunk and bottom sides of the larger branches. There are “down” lights mounted in the tree to shine down to show the ground around the tree. And there are “canopy” lights that illuminate the foliage from within the tree. When these three methods are used together, you can see and amazing display.
